Conductor 최수열 Sooyeoul Choi,

최수열은 2017년부터 부산시립교향악단의 예술감독으로, 동시에 2021년부터는 코리안챔버오케스트라(구 서울바로크합주단)의 역사상 첫 번째 수석객원지휘자로 임명되어 활동하고 있다. 현대음악에 대한 탁월한 재능과 아카데믹하면서도 창의적인 프로그래밍으로 인정받고 있으며, 함께 하는 연주자들을 먼저 배려하면서도 책임감을 잃지 않는 리더십을 지닌 지휘자이다. 바로크부터 동시대 음악까지의 영역을 아우르는 그의 레퍼토리는 이색적인 그림으로 완성되어 오르는 무대마다 독특하게 펼쳐진다. 부산시향과는 2017년부터 2019년까지 슈트라우스의 교향시 전곡에 이어, 2020년부터 2022년까지 라벨의 관현악곡 전곡 사이클을 국내 최초로 도전하여 성공적으로 완주했다. 작곡가 윤이상, 진은숙, 김택수, 신동훈의 작품에도 각별한 애정이 있으며, 이 시대의 중요한 현대음악은 반드시 악보가 아닌 연주로 보존해야 한다는 사명감도 지녔다. 

한국예술종합학교에서 정치용을 사사하며 지휘를 공부했고, 재학 시절부터 한국지휘자협회의 지속적인 지원을 받아 프로오케스트라와의 경험을 쌓았다. 독일학술교류처(DAAD) 예술분야 장학금 수여자로 선정되어 드레스덴국립음대에서 최고연주자과정을 최고점으로 마쳤으며, 같은 기간에 세계적인 현대음악단체인 앙상블모데른이 주관하는 아카데미에 합류해 프랑크푸르트에서도 활동했다.   이후 진은숙 상주작곡가가 기획한 서울시립교향악단의 현대음악시리즈인 ’아르스노바‘의 어시스턴트로 일했고, 2013년 정명훈 예술감독이 지도한 서울시향의 첫 번째 지휘 마스터클래스에서 최고점을 받아 이듬해 부지휘자로 선임되어 3년간 일했다. 2016년에는 정 예술감독의 대체지휘자로 말러의 교향곡 6번을 지휘하며 서울시향의 정기 연주회에 데뷔했다. 

최수열은 제 50회 브장송 국제지휘콩쿠르의 결선에 진출한 바 있고, 겐나지 로제스트벤스키, 크리스토프 에셴바흐, 페터 외트뵈시 등의 거장들을 어시스트했다. 라이프치히방송(MDR)교향악단, 예나필하모닉, 쾰른챔버오케스트라 등의 독일 악단과 중국국가대극원(NCPA)오케스트라, 대만국립교향악단, 일본 센다이필하모닉 등의 아시아 오케스트라를 지휘했다. 대부분의 국내 교향악단과 작업했고, 국립국악관현악단과 TIMF앙상블과는 수년째 각별한 관계를 이어오고 있다. 

Soo-Yeoul Choi, born in Seoul, is the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of Busan Philharmonic Orchestra(BPO), and also is appointed as the very first Principal Guest Conductor of Korean Chamber Orchestra from 2021. He has successfully performed the complete tone poems of Richard Strauss with BPO from 2017 to 2019 and has completed the orchestral works of Maurice Ravel from 2020 to 2022. He has a special affection for the works of composers Isang Yun, Unsuk Chin, Texu Kim and Donghoon Shin and has a sense of mission that important contemporary music of this era must be preserved as a performance rather than a score.

After studying at the Korea National University of Arts, he moved to Germany and obtained a Performer's Diploma(Konzertexamen) with the highest honors from Dresden University of Arts as a recipient of the DAAD(German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship in arts. He joined the academy hosted by the Ensemble Modern, a global contemporary music organization, and worked in Frankfurt. Afterward, with the Music directorship of Myung-Whun Chung and Unsuk Chin, as composer-in-residence, he worked as Associate conductor of Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra for 3 years.

Choi has entered the final of the 50th Besançon International Conductor Competition and has assisted major maestros such as Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Christoph Eschenbach, and Peter Eötvös, His conducting engagements include MDR sinfonieorchester Leipzig, Jena Philharmonic, Cologne Chamber, China NCPA, National Taiwan Symphony, Sendai Philharmonic and most major orchestras in Korea. He has been in a close relationship with the Ensemble TIMF for several years.
